What is an Ideal IVF diet?

When couples begin IVF treatment, food often becomes a topic of concern. Many patients ask whether there is a specific IVF diet that can improve egg quality, support the uterine lining or increase the chances of pregnancy. While there is no single food that can guarantee IVF success, eating a balanced and nutritious diet can support overall health during fertility treatment.

During IVF, I usually advise patients to focus less on superfoods and more on consistency. A balanced diet, adequate protein, good hydration and healthy weight are far more important than following restrictive diets or eating one particular food every day.

What should you eat during IVF treatment?

A fertility-friendly diet should include plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, pulses, nuts and seeds, and good sources of protein. Foods such as dal, beans, eggs, paneer, curd, fish and lean meats can help meet protein requirements, depending on individual dietary preferences.

Healthy fats are also important. Nuts, seeds, avocado and olive oil can be included in moderate amounts. Omega-3 fatty acids from sources such as fish and certain seeds may also form part of a balanced fertility diet.

Leafy green vegetables, beans,

citrus fruits and other folate-rich foods are useful, while folic acid supplementation should be taken as advised by the fertility specialist. Preconception guidance recommends folic acid supplementation to reduce the risk of neural tube defects.

What foods should you limit during IVF?

Patients undergoing IVF should avoid making their diet unnecessarily restrictive. At the same time, it is sensible to cut down on highly processed foods, excessive sugary drinks, trans fats and frequent fast food. Alcohol and smoking should be avoided when trying to conceive, while caffeine should be kept within moderate limits.

I also tell my patients not to experiment with herbal supplements, detox drinks or crash diets during IVF without discussing them with their doctor. Some products marketed as fertility boosters may not have enough evidence behind them and can sometimes interfere with treatment.

Can diet improve IVF success?

Diet is only one part of fertility care. Age, ovarian reserve, sperm health, embryo quality, underlying medical conditions and the individual IVF protocol all influence treatment outcomes. Research on specific diets and IVF outcomes has shown mixed results, so patients should be wary of claims that a particular food can guarantee implantation or pregnancy.

The best diet during IVF treatment is therefore one that is nutritious, sustainable and suited to the patient's medical needs. Instead of searching for a miracle food, focus on regular meals, adequate hydration, sufficient protein, fruits and vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats—and follow the supplements and medicines prescribed by your fertility specialist.
