IVF Treatment: Hope for infertile couples

IVF or in vitreo fertilization is a method to treat infertility worldwide. As we all know all that
infertility is a common modern day problem which means when you are unable to conceive naturally despite of one year of trying. As you age your fertility levels will decline and then you opt for IVF treatment to conceive So, it is very important to know things about IVF treatment before jumping into it:

1. When women's and men’s fertility really starts to fall
First and foremost you should know about the time or age when a woman's fertility starts to drop dramatically. It starts declining from the age of 30 onwards. Diminishing egg numbers along with diminishing egg quality is also one issue. A simple blood test, known as AMH, will tell a woman if she has a normal number of eggs for her age but tells us little about the quality of the eggs remaining. On the other hand, men's fertility can also reduce with age. While women are born with all the eggs they will ever have, men are continually producing new sperm. However, as men age, the quality of the genes in their sperm deteriorates from 40 onwards.

Obesity directly linked to Infertility in Women

Obesity is a chronic medical condition characterized by too much body fat. Obesity is diagnosed by a number called the Body Mass Index (BMI), which calculates the amount of body fat. Your BMI is calculated from your current height and weight. The higher the BMI the more body fat a person has. According to the WHO 1.2 billion people worldwide are officially classified as overweight. According to recent study 70% of India's urban population is obese and comes under overweight category.
According to ICMR bulletin, It is estimated that globally between 60-80 million couples suffer from infertility every year, of which probably between 15- 20 million are in India alone. We are all aware that being obese is not healthy. It's not a choice that one makes in life, contrary to popular belief. No one would want to suffer the problems caused by obesity. The reason for obesity can be anything from eating disorders to depression to lack of

Are you suffering from PCOS?

The pleasure of mother hood and bringing a new life into existence is undoubtedly the greatest blessing to every woman.  Every mother trained their daughters in teens to beware of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome which could get in the way of a pregnancy. Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common total body endocrine disease that affects women of reproductive age from puberty to menopause. It affects approximately 10% of women in the reproductive age group.

Both males and females produce hormones called androgens, referred to as male hormones, which play a role in sexual functioning of the body. In girls with PCOS, the ovaries produce higher levels of androgens than normal, and this interferes with egg development and release. Some of the eggs develop into cysts which are little sacs filled with liquid and instead of being released during ovulation, these cysts build up in the ovaries

Trying to conceive: Myths vs. facts

What’s the truth and what are just old wives tales!

It generally happens "When you're trying to conceive, you, the female, are the one
obsessing over it — figuring out when you're ovulating, when is your period date, and the guy is somewhat oblivious. If you're not conceiving, the burden of guilt, so to speak, is on the female. A lot of couples don't realize that 35 to 40 percent of the time, there's going to be a male factor. And they're very surprised when they find out."

Not Able to get pregnant is often a misunderstood condition, which is why there's so much confusion surrounding it. Here are some common myths & truth observeds by Dr. Shobha Gupta, Infertility Specialist at Mother’s Lap IVF Centre – New Delhi.

It's easy to get pregnant, In the best of circumstances, a pregnancy occurs only 20 percent of the time people have unprotected sex. We won't even start (an infertility) workup until patients have gone one year without conception, or the woman is over 35."

Most common causes of female infertility

A woman’s fertility is influenced by her age: female fertility peaks in the early to mid 20’s and declines slowly until the age of 35, However, there are a number of younger women who, despite their perceived fertility, have difficulty in conceiving.
It is generally advised that women under the age of 35 age wait for one year before investigating why they are failing to conceive.

There are two types of infertility:
Primary infertility: where someone who has never conceived a child in the past has difficulty conceiving.
Secondary infertility: where a person has had one or more pregnancies in the past, but is having difficulty conceiving again. It is estimated that 1/3 of the causes of infertility are associated with male factors such as poor sperm quality, 1/3 attributed to female factors. Three of the most common conditions that contribute to early female infertility are pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome.

Important things to know about your fertility

India has a population of over 1.2 billion; the number of Indians suffering from infertility is huge. An estimated one in seven couple in India have fertility problems and mostly there is no known medical explanation and it is also believed that 10% of the general population suffers from some form of infertility. So, get educated and take control of your fertility.

Do take note of the following points:

1. Don’t be too fit to be pregnant: Yes you heard it right, do not be too fit; It is indeed very important to be healthy, but excessive exercise can negatively affect fertility in both men and women. A recent research conducted in US examining 2,232 women undergoing IVF treatment found that women who engaged in cardiovascular exercise for four hours or more per week prior to the treatment had a 40 per cent decrease in live birth rate. Men need to be aware of testicular heat negatively affecting their fertility, too.

2. Don't rely on your pee. Be cautious when relying on urinary LH detection (ovulation) kits alone. The quality of cervical mucus falls rapidly as progesterone rises in response to the LH surge. Hence by the time the LH is detected by urinary ovulation kits, the cervical mucus quality may

Precautions for Pregnant women for Holi

Holi is the time when people forget their ill wills and come together to mark the celebration. As the
long weekend started so it is very important for pregnant women to take care of few things while playing holi.

Earlier colors was made up of herbs and flowers but as time passes chemicals, dyes have replaced this tradition and now a day’s people play holi with chemically treated colors. Some colors are even carcinogenic. So, it is very important for a pregnant or lactating mother to simply stay away from colors.

Not only colors; bhang is also the one such tradition associated with holi. In Delhi especially, rang and bhang are the two things which completes the festival. But bhang’s overdose can lead to serious health complications. Bhang is an intoxicant which makes you feel drowsy and sleepy. Consumption of bhang can result in high blood pressure, increased heart rate; it can also affect foetus, nervous system and brain.

It is very important for a pregnant woman not to play holi at all; stay indoors or even if you want to step out then go with your trusted elders around. So, lactating mothers should practice same caution as pregnant women. Use of these colors by pregnant women may result in pre mature birth, low weight birth and miscarriage or abortion. It can also affect the nervous and reproductive system, Pregnant women have reduced immunity levels and are, therefore, more prone to illnesses and infections, and their skin is more sensitive as well. Therefore, reaction to colors that one may have is very dangerous. Chemical colors have harmful health effects on the baby through breast milk. So, lactating mothers should practice same caution as pregnant women.

You can have homemade colors which can be made by using turmeric, roli (sindoor), boiled beetroot and onions. Tradition, if it must be followed, can be respected by placing a sandalwood or saffron tikaa on the baby's forehead.

Also do apply a thick petroleum jelly moisturizer on the skin and oil on the hair before started playing holi. Washing oneself properly is especially important for lactating mothers who otherwise risk their baby ingesting colors.

So, take precautions and enjoy the festival of colors. Happy Holi to all from the Team Mother’s Lap IVF.

SLEEP WELL FOR YOUR FERTILITY

Not getting enough sleep. It could be bad for your fertility. According to a research, women can experience irregular periods due to poor sleep habits. This in turn increases chances of infertility and miscarriages. Poor sleeping habits can also lead to weight gains which could again lead to fertility related issues. While we sleep, our body repairs cells and regulates our hormones, in addition to many other processes. Leptin is one of these special hormones. Some studies have indicated that leptin levels outside an ideal range can have a negative effect on egg quality and outcome during in vitro fertilization. During sleep, leptin levels normally rise. When women do not get sufficient sleep, the leptin levels decrease and affect the ovulation and thereby fertility as well.

So, Sleep well!!
