Are busy lifestyles contributing to male infertility?

Infertility is common today and has become a clinical problem today affecting 8 to 12 %
couples worldwide. However, usually people think that infertility is a female problem but science has proved both the partners contribute equally to infertility. In-fact, many studies claims that 40% cases of infertility are due to males.

Let’s see how our busy and hectic lifestyle contributes heavily in male infertility.

Today, major problem in developing countries like India is the growing MNC culture where both the partners are working with erratic working hours and hardly got any time to be together. And of course the work place stress as everybody knows heavily contributes to sub-fertility or infertility in a couple, leading to an inability to have relations during the fertile period.

Today’s generation couples tend to marry late and then plan pregnancy even later, which further worsen the chances of pregnancy. A woman’s reproductive age spans between 15-45
years. When such a couple starts planning pregnancy, the clock is already ticking and they have a limited time for a desired outcome.

Men who work in night shifts affected more as compared to men working in morning shifts with infertility as their biological clock is very badly disturbed. They sleep during the day and to keep themselves awake, they often smoke, which damages the system further. The stress at work place and sitting for long hours at work stations is also found to reduce the sperm count.

Another important contributory factor to the growing problem of infertility is lifestyle changes, with most corporate couples leading a sedentary lifestyle, mostly working on computers and laptops. Obesity, due to unhealthy food habits, also leads to male or female sub-fertility. The growing incidence of alcohol and smoking especially in males has worsened fertility issues.
But thanks to technology due to which we have found the treatment for infertility through IVF or IUI. On the other hand today women as well as men are also trying stress management techniques to overcome this problem.

There are numerous methods for decreasing stress are available today, including learning relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation and stress management strategies, going for a vacation, deep breathing exercises etc. We also provide counselling sessions on one to one basis to couples so that they can freely speak up their mind. This helps in overcoming their problem.
