Tips for Pre Natal Care

By Dr. Shobha Gupta

Prenatal care can help keep you and your baby healthy. It should start with the thought of conception and lasts throughout your entire pregnancy. So, here are few essential tips:

  • Avoid smoking and drinking during pregnancy. As it has been linked to premature delivery, birth defects, and low birth weight babies. Smoking raises your risk of abortion and many other problems.
  • Eating junk food during your pregnancy can lead to mental disorders. Have a proper well balanced diet. Take more Pulses in your diet as they are low fat, high in fibre, with no cholesterol, low glycemic index, high in protein and nutrients. But ask your doctor if you need to take a daily prenatal vitamin or iron supplement to be sure you are getting enough of it.
  • One of the most important considerations in prenatal care is fitness and exercise. Being fit and healthy is essential for your baby's best chance for good health. Exercise helps to maintain weight, reduces stress during pregnancy.
  • Have seven to nine hours of apt sleep every night. Resting on your side will improve blood flow to your baby and help prevent swelling and find ways to control stress.
  • Stay away from chemicals like insecticides, solvents, lead, mercury, paints and also avoid contact with rodents, including pet rodents, and with their urine, droppings, or nesting material as they carry a virus that can be harmful or even deadly to your unborn baby.
