Winter and pregnancy care

By Dr. Shobha Gupta

Pregnancy is the hormonal, metabolic and physiological changes in your center of gravity that make you tired and sick sometimes if not well taken care. When you are pregnant you need to take some extra care during winters. Pregnant women may feel less cold as compared to non-pregnant ladies because of higher rate of metabolism. But need of being careful against winter is more as illness affects welfare of not only mother but also of baby.

Pregnant ladies must continue with their walk once or twice a day and antenatal exercises as before the winter, one can change the timings if suitable from foggy mornings to warm sunny noon hours or early evenings depending on individual convenience. Physical activity is important to be continued as before but while going out in cold, keep well covered and warm.

During journey or social and family engagements, don't overexert and take rest in between. Adequate sleep should be ensured to recover from fatigue. Cold and fatigue together make the pregnant lady fall sick easier than others. Proper rest promises good growth of baby as well, while sickness may restrict it.

Keeping these precautions in mind, would-be-mothers can enjoy good health in pregnancy and ensure healthy little ones. Here are few handful tips in this regard:

Say NO to Tobacco for the sake of your parenthood

Tobacco use has been considered controversial for long although scientific evidence regarding its health hazards. Consumption of tobacco is mainly in the form of bidi, followed by cigarette, hukah, chilum, chutta, etc. The habit of smokeless tobacco (also referred astobacco chewing) is also very common. PCOS affects millions of women worldwide

By Dr. Shobha Gupta

The pleasure of mother hood and bringing a new life into existence is undoubtedly the greatest blessing to every woman.  Every mother trained their daughters in teens to beware of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome which could get in the way of a pregnancy. Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common total body endocrine disease that affects women of reproductive age from puberty to menopause. It affects approximately 10% of women in the reproductive age group.

Watch out for unwanted hairs and extra weight around your waist. It could be PCOS. Both males and females produce hormones called androgens, referred to as male hormones, which play a role in sexual functioning of the body. In girls with PCOS, the ovaries produce higher levels of androgens than normal, and this interferes with egg development and release. Some of the eggs develop into cysts which are little sacs filled with liquid and instead of being released during ovulation, these cysts build up in the ovaries and even get enlarged , hence the main polycystic ovaries or Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome.

SLEEP WELL FOR YOUR FERTILITY

Not getting enough sleep. It could be bad for your fertility. According to a research, women can experience irregular periods due to poor sleep habits. This in turn increases chances of infertility and miscarriages. Poor sleeping habits can also lead to weight gains which could again lead to fertility related issues. While we sleep, our body repairs cells and regulates our hormones, in addition to many other processes. Leptin is one of these special hormones. Some studies have indicated that leptin levels outside an ideal range can have a negative effect on egg quality and outcome during in vitro fertilization. During sleep, leptin levels normally rise. When women do not get sufficient sleep, the leptin levels decrease and affect the ovulation and thereby fertility as well.

So, Sleep well!!

ARE YOU A COFFEE DRINKER?

Are you a coffee drinker? It’s time to give it up! Caffeine is thought to restrict the growth of a developing baby by constricting blood vessels and reducing blood flow to the uterus. What’s more, a few studies have indicated that excessive consumption of caffeine if it’s more than three cups per day then it may contribute to fertility problems as well.

Caffeine may impact the ability to become pregnant. Several studies have shown that caffeine increases the length of time it takes to conceive. One study showed that women who drank more than one cup of coffee a day were half as likely to become pregnant per cycle as compared to women who consumed less. Another study in patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) demonstrated that women who consumed even modest amounts of caffeine (50 mg) were likely to have decreased live birth rates. While the exact mechanism by which caffeine affects fertility is unknown, the answer may be related to the ability of caffeine to influence the quality of the developing oocyte (egg). Preliminary studies in mice and monkeys suggest caffeine inhibits oocyte maturation. An immature oocyte does not fertilize and therefore is unable to produce

IVF IS A BLESSING

IVF has proved as a Blessing for modern day woman. In past few days trend of IVF and Surrogacy has seen an upliftment especially after actors Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan openly admits about having their baby through IVF. Production of sperm or eggs, with the Fallopian tubes or the uterus, endometriosis, frequent miscarriage, as well as hormonal and autoimmune (antibody) disorders in both men and women are the causes of infertility which pushes them back from being parents.

Women have lower pregnancy chances after 30. The fertility of a woman starts declining after she crosses 30 and men fertility too starts dropping after 35. The chances of miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy or chromosomal abnormality go up as you come of age in such couples. In such cases IVF support is very high.

DRINK WATER TO CONCEIVE

By Dr. Shobha Gupta

Yes, its right drinking water can boost your fertility. It sounds simple, but when you’re trying to conceive it is very important to drink lots of water (about 8-10 cups a day).  This helps ‘clean out’ your system and also increases fertile-quality cervical fluid.

If you don’t drink enough water, the reproductive system will lose out as the body ensures that the more vital organs receive what they need first. Also, water creates plump egg follicles and a strong blood supply to the womb lining.

So, have a healthy sip of water.

PREGNANCY & SUMMERS

By Dr. Shobha Gupta

I often talk to my clients who are so very pregnant and due in the summer months because I know that pregnancy adds an extra burden to the usual summer heat. So, here are some tips that you should keep in mind during the summer while pregnant.

Stay Hydrated: Drink at least 2 liters of clear liquids, preferably water. If you are outside you need at least eight ounces of water for every hour you are outside. Drink before you get thirsty, thirst can be a sign that you've waited too long.  You may be retaining water during your pregnancy and a great way to get rid of it is to flush it out with more liquid.

Avoid Sun: During pregnancy it's best to avoid direct sunlight. If you are in the sun use a 30-45 SPF sunscreen. Try to go outside in the cooler parts of the sunshine, early morning and late afternoon, rather than high noon.

Go for light colored clothing: Wear clothing that is light in color and in fabric weight. Avoid restrictive clothes, because this can increase your discomfort and add to swelling problems.

Stay cool & enjoy your pregnancy..!!

Sitting for long periods can raise testicle temperature especially if you are working in a hot environment. This may affect sperm's ability to mature, leading to poorer sperm quality & a temporary drop in sperm production. It is recommended to have regular breaks and get up and move around, if you have a job that involves sitting for long periods.

NO SMOKING

By Dr. Shobha Gupta

Cigarette smoking is harmful to the ovaries, and the degree of damage is dependent upon the amount and length of the time a woman smokes or is exposed to a smoked environment. Nicotine and other harmful chemicals in cigarettes interfere with the body’s ability to create estrogen, a hormone that regulates folliculogenesis and ovulation. Female smokers also have decreased rates of fertility and decreased fallopian tube function. It not only can lead to all kinds of serious problems with the baby but also reduces the chances of IVF producing a live birth by 34% and increases the risk of an IVF pregnancy miscarrying by 30%. A pregnant woman who smokes also adds a risk to pregnancy.

Life Management strategies recommended:

Start by quitting
Eat a well-balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D
Avoid excessive use of alcohol
Exercise Regularly
Be Nature friendly
Be Your Own Bodyguard

By Dr. Shobha Gupta

Failing to conceive is a tough time. Stress & depression are side-effect of this experience. Under depression, people tend to segregate themselves because they lack the desire to be with other people. This can lead to more depression which is one of the reasons for infertility and the problem becomes a vicious circle. Reach out to your friends, family members or work colleagues, talk more, be more and more social.
