PCOS diagnosis leads to pregnancy

As we all know that every year September is PCOS awareness month that is being considered all over the world. Many people doesn’t even know that they aware suffering from PCOS; such is a case of Mrinalani Bansal(34), a housewife living with PCOS since teenage till her husband Sudhir Bansal recognized her symptoms in an article he was reading by Dr Shobha Gupta about the PCOS is one of the reason for not being able to conceive and how IVF treatment helps in conceiving.

Having periods just once or twice in a year with very less flow had become the normal for Mrinalani though she as living with the two classic symptoms on PCOS that is irregular periods and unwanted hair growth.

Early PCOS diagnosis would have helped

“When I couldn’t get pregnant I felt as though I had failed as a woman,if I had been more aware of my PCOS symptoms I would have got advice sooner than I did.” said Mrinalani.

About 30% of female infertility cases observed today are due to polycystic ovaries. Majority of these cases fall under the age group of 20-30 years. Hence, it becomes very important for young women to be aware of their body and the symptoms

they exhibit. Recognize PCOS if you have:

  • Irregular periods
  • Unwanted hair growth on body or having facial hairs
  • Weight gain
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Acne
What causes PCOS ?

While the exact cause of PCOS is unknown, but it is to be believed that hormonal imbalances and genetics play a role. Women are more likely to develop PCOS if their mother or sister also has the condition. PCOS may also manifest because of the changing lifestyle trends like late working hours, bad food habits, lack of sleep and exercise, etc. resulting in various medical conditions such as obesity, which in turn cause hormonal imbalance.

When consulted with Mother’s Lap IVF Centre team they explained that  PCOS is a hormonal imbalance that can cause resistance to insulin, which can impact, egg production in the ovaries and make it difficult to maintain a healthy BMI (Body Mass Index). Not all women with PCOS struggle to conceive but for those who have irregular periods losing weight can help to stimulate ovulation.

Mrinalani was advised to lose some weight as she was 79 kgs. The weight loss helped and after successful IVF treatment the couple welcomed the birth of their daughter some nine months later.

Treatment for PCOS

PCOS is not a disease but only a disorder which can be managed once the treatment begins. Recognizing the symptoms of PCOS early and working on improving insulin resistance through diet and exercise can help prevent complications of PCOS including infertility and other complications during pregnancy. To eliminate PCOS, simple treatment at the right time can help manage the condition; however if left untreated, it may cause serious health problems like diabetes or heart problems.

Changes in lifestyle such as healthy food habit with adequate exercise would not only help prevent PCOS, but also other health problems. Young girls are advised to avoid starchy food, complex carbohydrates and fat. As little as 5% weight loss,if achieved by healthy eating habits and exercise can reverse the problem of anovulation (no ovulation) to spontaneous timely ovulation.
