11/12/13

“A perfect date for Conception”

By Dr. Shobha Gupta

The Statesman Coverage
We have seen date craze from many years now, last year it was 12/12/12 and this year once again we shall see the craze on 11/12/13. The date obsession is such that last year we witnessed thousands of marriages been solemnized and even baby deliveries lined up at various gynae centers. This year it will be little different.

According to astrologers and health experts, the craze for date-specific births started at the turn of the millennium with couples selecting sequence of numbers for the birth of their child.

The Asian Age Coverage
At our Mother’s Lap IVF centre, couples are coming not for delivery this year but to get their conceiving done on this unique date i.e. 11/12/13. Last year we had delivered 5 to 7 babies on 12.12.12 and this year we got queries from couples who are in absolute normal condition and doesn’t require any infertility treatment but they want to conceive through IVF on this special date.

Main part of IVF is the ET which is called Embryo Transfer which usually takes 10 to 15 days to be injected in woman’s womb. Couples are planning their IVF so that their ET gets confirmed on 11/12/13 means they shall conceive their baby on 11/12/13.

Earlier it was more about an auspicious time according to the progress of the planets and stars, but trend has been changed now, couples are increasingly opting for precise dates to give their child an exclusive gift for a lifetime and they are ready to spend any number of amounts for it. Even couples who are fit to deliver naturally are opting for IVF just to conceive on a special date.

Deccan Herald Coverage
Speaking about their plans to conceive a baby on this unique day, couple Sachin and Neha Chopra from New Delhi (name changed on request) feels this special conception date connects their bond of love more strongly.

Neha Chopra said “we are very excited about the conception of our baby on this special date. In fact, we spoke to Dr. Shobha to try and does our ET at 12 minutes pass 11 am to make it even more special. As per our numerologist also, this time would be the best according to the terrestrial positions.

There are number of queries which we are tackling these days; I can see the date craze has been raised from the last couple of years. This year we have 10 to 12 couples lined up for the conception. They are not infertile but still they are going for IVF treatment in our centre as they believe that 11-12-13 is an auspicious date for conceiving. In fact one of the couple said that 11-12-13 makes number 9 if u add all of them which is their lucky number, they believe in numerology. So, that’s why they are going for IVF to have a baby. We shall be doing their ET i.e Embryo transfer on 11-12-13.”
Hari bhoomi Coverage

11- 1+1=2
12- 1+2=3
13- 1+3=4
Now, if u add 2+3+4 = 9

In past, it was 12-12-12 where we had delivered 5 to7 babies through IVF. This year it is, 11-12-13 and next year would be 12-13-14 in which 14 is the year, 12 is the month and 13 is the date. If u add all then you will get number 12 = 3. (same as addition of 11-12-13) And people who are born on the date 3 shall consider being genius. Eg- Abrahm Lincoln, Mark Twain etc. This all information I have heard from my patients who believed in numerology.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

By Dr. Shobha Gupta

In every 100 couples, 40 percent of the males suffer from infertility compared to 50 percent women. In the remaining 5 percent, the causes are common to both men and women.

Some common causes of infertility in men are irregular sperm production, hampered sperm delivery due to either erectile dysfunction or early ejaculation, presence of medical conditions such as obesity that may hamper sperm production, certain infections such as Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), and lifestyle conditions such as diet imbalance, addiction to smoking or alcoholism, sedentary existence, or mental and emotional stress, all of which contribute to poor sperm count.

In women, hectic lifestyle and job stress contribute to conception problems. A very common cause is polycystic ovary disease (PCOD), a condition characterized by excess production of hormones and lack of ovulation.

If you are facing above mentioned problems or see any kind of symptoms then please visit an infertility expert.

Choose your Happiness with Mother's Lap IVF Centre

By Dr. Shobha Gupta

Why to choose Mother’s Lap IVF for surrogacy?

Mother’s Lap IVF Clinic offers their patients with few of the best surrogate mothers they can acquire. These females are fairly well cultured, gorgeous, and conscientious. Only following fine counseling, does Mother’s Lap indoctrinate these females into their particular Surrogate-pool.

We choose the surrogate mothers only after full consent from their husbands. All the investigations of the surrogates are got done by us without the intended parents having to run around. We select some of the most fertile women who have completed their families with two or more than two children.

Their infection profiles are completed by us and even other tests which are needed or requested by the intended parents. After the pregnancy is confirmed, the staff at Mother’s Lap keeps the Intended parents (IP) well informed through the internet, updating them about the progress of their baby by sending them the reports and ultrasound scans and sometimes even arranges video conferencing in case the IP is interested in having a face to face confirmation of the baby’s well-being.

The staff also keeps a tab on the progress of the surrogate mother by sending them weekly payments which takes care of their food and medicines. The final payment is done at delivery of the baby. An officer of the center is always present with the surrogate to check on her, so that she can come to the center for her fortnightly/monthly check-ups and Ultrasound monitoring.

Mother’s Lap also takes care of the legal formalities and provides the IP with all the birth certificate and exit visa documents at the time of emigration. Mother’s lap IVF is a best surrogacy centre in Delhi
If you have any query related infertility then please feel free to contact us or mail us. Thanx!

Obese and Infertile –is there any link between the two?

 By Dr. Shobha Gupta

  • Current figures in New Delhi indicate that every second person fulfills criteria of obesity or has excess abdominal fat.
  • Women who are obese are also at a greater risk for pregnancy complications

  • Obesity is a chronic medical condition characterized by too much body fat. Obesity is diagnosed by a number called the Body Mass Index (BMI), which calculates the amount of body fat. Your BMI is calculated from your current height and weight. The higher the BMI the more body fat a person has.

We are all aware that being obese is not healthy. It's not a choice that one makes in life, contrary to popular belief. No one would want to suffer the problems caused by obesity. The reason for obesity can be anything from eating disorders to depression to lack of physical activities to hormonal imbalances etc. What is important is to take a step with determination and be a part of the fight against obesity.

    Problems due to obesity:

Yet another growing problem in today’s time among the population is infertility caused due to Obesity. Weight problem cases are on increase everywhere, and so are infertility clinics. Almost 10% of couples in the country get affected by infertility and are hesitant to take medical advice. The obesity rates in India have been rising at an extensive rate, out of which quarter of the women’s population is defined as medically obese.

Experts believe obesity has to do with the lifestyle issues of the major population in urban India. The urban populace has easy access to high-calorie packaged foods such as burgers, chips and colas. Moreover, people in cities follow a sedentary lifestyle. Little or no physical activity and a predilection for gizmos such as video games, computers are to blame.

What Fertility Issues Are Caused By Excessive Weight Gain?

    • Irregular or infrequent menstrual cycles
    • Increased risk of infertility
    • Less success with fertility treatments
    • Increased risk of miscarriage.
    • Obesity also increases the risks of high blood pressure and diabetes during the pregnancy
I see at least 10 to 25 patients in a day coming to me for infertility out of which 50 to 60% are obese”. Current figures in New Delhi indicate that every second person fulfills criteria of obesity or has excess abdominal fat.

Women who are obese are also at a greater risk for pregnancy complications like having a C-section, giving birth to a large baby or even developing gestational diabetes and hypertension.

Shilpi Sachdeva (name changed on request) 30, a patient of mine, a housewife, her world came to an end when she got to know that she can’t be pregnant. She was fat, Shilpi’s BMI was 35 before marriage and she is 5ft taller but she ignored. When the pressure from in-laws increases to have baby then she underwent Ovarian reserve testing which helps determining the quality and quantity of the eggs available for ovulation.

Her tests showed that she has developed abnormalities in her eggs that make them impossible to fertilize – and is suffering from infertility due to which she is now unable to conceive and the sole reason being her infertile is her fat.

We advised Shilpi to lose weight first and opt for IVF, many other obese infertility patients in our program wind up achieving successful IVF after they lose weight.

    Less time and loose more:

On the other hand, with little or no time in hand of our young urban population, they need to loose weight on time and can shed any exorbitant amount to look good.

Patients undergoing massive weight loss after Bariatric surgery will need cosmetic surgery to remove loose overhanging skin from various body areas. The number of Indian patients seeking body contouring procedures after dramatic weight loss like Abdominoplasty, breast lift surgery, lower body lift, arm lift etc.

    Hormonal Imbalance:
It is also one thing which is caused by Obesity. The obesity epidemic in teenage girls and also in men has led to increased insulin production and in some cases a hormonal imbalance called polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can leads to heart disease, diabetes, and infertility.

Many young girls complaints about irregular periods, skin acne and abnormal hair growth on their body which appear to be caused by a higher than normal production of male hormones.

If overweight girls with PCOS can lose upto15 kgs they might resume their regular periods without medication. This would also improve their other PCOS related symptoms and also increases their chances of conceiving.

Peripheral fat deposition leads to conversion of male hormones into female hormones. This not only increases the deposition of fat in the breast region but also results in a reduction of sperm production in men.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES TO GET RID OF OBESITY:
Obesity needs to be managed long-term with a combination of diet, increased activity and lifestyle changes.

    • Balanced diet
    • Regular physical exercise and relaxation exercise
    • Eat three meals everyday breakfast, lunch and dinner
    • Reduce your intake of food or drinks that contain high level of sugar and fat
    • Eat more fruits, green leafy vegetables and salads
    • Quit smoking and drinking
    • Go for brisk walking twice in a day for 30 minutes
    Stay healthy and obesity free..!!

    Tips for IVF Success

    By Dr. Shobha Gupta
    1. Avoid making major life changes such as moving to a new house or starting a new job the same time you’re going through the IVF process.
    2. For Men - Check your semen before beginning an IVF cycle, to determine its quality and whether there is an infection present, among other potential issues.
    3. Maintain proper communication with your IVF consultant/doctor as then your IVF treatment will be much easier.
    4. A few months before your IVF, begin eating a fertility diet. Getting nutritious foods is vital for producing healthy eggs and promoting implantation of the embryo.
    5. Intake of CoQ10 helps to keep the eggs integrity by protecting them from free radicals. It is best taken for two to three months before having IVF.
    6. Try not to stress and be positive. As High stress levels are known to reduce fertility in both men and women and compromise the outcome of an IVF cycle.
    7. In case of OHSS, drink lots of fluids. Drink Pedialyte instead of Gatorade. Drinking 3-5 liters of water per day can prevent OHSS in some cases.
    8. Continue eating a well balanced diet.
    9. Your diet should consist of 4-6 small meals each day and each should consist of some complex carbohydrate (such as brown rice or quinoa) interspread with fresh fruits and vegetables.
    10. Alcohol consumption, even in small amounts, can reduce a woman's chance of conceiving by more than 50%,
    11. Five cups of coffee per day more than doubles a pregnant woman’s risk of a miscarriage, according to perhaps the most rigorous study yet to focus on the possible link between caffeine and miscarriage.
    12. Note the date when your period starts, the number of days it lasts, and anything else your doctor might want to know about. This information could prove helpful if you experience problems in conceiving. It can also prove invaluable in pinpointing the date of conception--and consequently your due date.
    13. It’s important to balance the stressful experience of IVF with pleasurable activities that promote relaxation and wellness.

Surrogate Pregnancy - A Side Unexplored

    By Dr. Shobha Gupta

    Surrogacy in India
As many of us know that Surrogacy is now a well explored and accepted form of starting a family that people are turning to. Derived from the Latin word surrogates referring to substitution, the word simply means a biological or non biological mother carrying the child of another woman for full nine months.

Surrogacy is advised to those who have either no or a malformed uterus, uterus damaged due to infection/ tumor, and where the uterus is removed for some clinical process. Surrogacy is also for those couples intending to be parents but where the woman is having repeated miscarriages.

When pregnancy is a life threatening condition for the woman, in India however, the prime reason for surrogacy is the cost factor which is approximately 5 times cheaper as compared elsewhere. In 2007, ICSI costed 4 lakhs abroad (U.K) and here the price was 60,000/-even today if we consider their commuting, stay charges but excluding drugs for stimulation, it would still be cheaper to many outstation parents to be.

Some other factors working in the favor of India are the teams of doctors who are US/ UK trained and educated, the equipments are also imported from Europe or US and there is marginally no language barrier makes India as the amiable destination for many seeking pregnancy through a surrogate.

One reason that many of us do not know is that India is also a premium centre for surrogacy due to the healthy lifestyle of an Indian women. Indian women are categorically marked as someone not engaged in drugs, smoking, and alcohol and having a balanced and fresh food and vegetables in her diet which makes India a preferred destination for many foreign couples as females are fertile here as compared to females living in abroad.

When it comes to surrogates in India, they have a proper screening process that includes being watchful of the age that should be between approx. 21 – 35 years. It is made sure that they are married with kids; with uncomplicated pregnancies, this helps to discern that she can successfully carry the pregnancy to completion. Their medical, personal and family history is also gauged to decipher the mental and the physical well being of the surrogate.

After the preliminary screening of the surrogate, a well detailed contract as per the ICMR guideline is made between the surrogate and the couples in question that are comprehensive too well guard all the three main parties involves – the parent, child and the surrogate.

Many surrogate centers provide all these services and are very stringent about it. There are separate departments for paper work where the contract along with the medical reports is collated in one file and submitted to the embassy. Hence, the overall lack of legal hassles with the Indian Government ensuring that the commissioning parents are parents on Birth Certificate and for all legal and custodial purposes also adds to the advantage of surrogacy in India.

In our centre- Mother's Lap, “When it comes to providing legal aid, there is an independent lawyer that we recommend to parents as he is very experienced with these matters but couples are free to decide who they choose”.

“Surrogacy in India is booming as monthly on an average we have about 2-3 Indian patients and 25 International parents that are from Australia, America, Europe, UK,  Korea, China, Middle East, Jakarta, and Africa all in their late thirties or early forties every month.”

Commenting on the success ratio of the surrogacy in India, Dr. Shobha informs that “the miscarriage rate is 15 % however 55% - carry back their baby. In case of 4 embryos, success rate is 8/10 as females are fertile here. This is indeed a very safe ratio to rely on.”

Summing it up, we can say that Surrogacy overall has definitely proven to be one Godsend means for many who while undergoing a complication thought that starting a family is just a distant dream. With modern amenities, well trained staff on hand and overall healthy surrogates, India sure has become a hum of surrogate pregnancy.

If you are looking for simple pleasures of being a parent, if you are prepared to accept this lifelong responsibility, then this pregnancy awareness week you would be enthralled to know that your dream is just a surrogate away.

    Tips for Pre Natal Care

    By Dr. Shobha Gupta

Prenatal care can help keep you and your baby healthy. It should start with the thought of conception and lasts throughout your entire pregnancy. So, here are few essential tips:

    • Avoid smoking and drinking during pregnancy. As it has been linked to premature delivery, birth defects, and low birth weight babies. Smoking raises your risk of abortion and many other problems.
    • Eating junk food during your pregnancy can lead to mental disorders. Have a proper well balanced diet. Take more Pulses in your diet as they are low fat, high in fibre, with no cholesterol, low glycemic index, high in protein and nutrients. But ask your doctor if you need to take a daily prenatal vitamin or iron supplement to be sure you are getting enough of it.
    • One of the most important considerations in prenatal care is fitness and exercise. Being fit and healthy is essential for your baby's best chance for good health. Exercise helps to maintain weight, reduces stress during pregnancy.
    • Have seven to nine hours of apt sleep every night. Resting on your side will improve blood flow to your baby and help prevent swelling and find ways to control stress.
    • Stay away from chemicals like insecticides, solvents, lead, mercury, paints and also avoid contact with rodents, including pet rodents, and with their urine, droppings, or nesting material as they carry a virus that can be harmful or even deadly to your unborn baby.

“A doctor is someone who listens to your problems, makes it their own and looks after you till you get well.”

Here’s sharing a beautiful message by my patient.

    Dear Dr. Shobha,

The attention given to us, regarding timely answers, the methodology (the fact you use more than one surrogate increases chances of pregnancy) and the cost was reasonable. We always felt more than just a “client”, the treatment was always very professional and sensitive, making us feel comfortable, understood and supported. We would be happy to make reference to your services to other couples in similar situation.

We also want to express our thanks and appreciation for the wonderful treatment and care you all showed to us following Bernardo’s birth. You demonstrated your total commitment into caring for Bernardo, and also gave us the support and encouragement we needed to take my first steps as new born parents!

Thank you for all support in Delhi and for being always there during those incredible days of our lives - not only medical but also administrative and bureaucratic.

Thanks to you all; without your help, our dream would not have been possible - so you can imagine how grateful we are. Now our family is complete! We cannot thank you enough.

Mrs and Mr. Paulo Amaral from Portugal
I remember, when we contacted you for the first time, we were looking forward to a long-held dream: to have a second child. Nine months later, you gave us a wonderful gift, so precious and sweet! Bernardo, born in Delhi on May 3rd, is healthy and beautiful boy, growing well every day.

We deeply thank Mother’s Lap team; you have done an amazing job. We’d like to particularly thank Dr. Gupta and Dr. Raj for their medical expertise. These were members of the team whom we saw on a daily basis and whom we became particularly close to during our stay in India. Besides the medical miracle, your support during the past 9 months was very much-appreciated. So, we’d also like to thank all the other people (nurses and support staff) who all played such an important part in Bernardo’s beginning!

Thank you all once again for all your care and support.

    Well done, Mother’s Lap team!!!

    Lots of Love,
Mr and Mrs Paulo Amaral, Portugal

Thank You Mrs and Mr. Paulo for your sweet words. Your baby looks super cute in the pic.
