Hypnosis may boost IVF success rate

As we all know that infertility is a growing problem. According to WHO approximately 8-10% of couples experience some form of infertility problem. On a worldwide scale, this means that 50-80 million people suffer from infertility.

Some facts in India about infertility-
  • An estimated one in seven couple in India have fertility problems and mostly there is no known medical explanation.
  • It is believed that 10% of the general population suffers from some form of infertility.
  • India has a population of over 1.2 billion, the number of Indians suffering from infertility is huge.
  • Of every 100 couples reporting to fertility clinics, 40 per cent are cases of male infertility, 50 per cent are of women, and the remaining 10 per cent of both partners being infertile.

Infertility is complex and stressful experience and going for IVF often causes more stress to women because of fear of conceiving or not. In vitreo fertilization or IVF is a technique use to treat infertility which is widely popular and acceptable now as more and more couples are seeking towards it.
We have often seen that hypnotism is used when a person forgets themselves and goes in trance or in a state they move in and out of all of the time. When a person drifts off to sleep at night and wake up in the morning; they move through the hypnologic state, whilst daydreaming etc. But science has taken a step forward and proved that hypnosis can double the chances of IVF success rate.

We have introduced hypnosis or progressive relaxation therapy in IVF at our centre and the results are amazing. Our success rate has improved drastically in past one year.  We have used this progressive relaxation therapy on about 206 women so far and about 65% of them have been conceived.
According to a research done in European society of Human Reproduction and Embryology hypnosis can double the IVF success rate. The study was conducted by Professor Eliahu Levitas. In his study of 185 women found that 28% of women in the group who were hypnotized became pregnant, compared with 14% of those who were not.
Main part of IVF is the ET which is called Embryo Transfer which usually takes 10 to 15 days to contribute to an increased clinical pregnancy rate. Women may be stressed during embryo transfer from fears that the treatment will fail, fear of having a miscarriage that can effectively create an obstacle to conception; they will conceive or not or that the transfer will be painful etc.

Hypnosis helped a woman's uterus to remain relaxed, allowing the embryo to implant more easily. It is also possible, they say, that hypnosis produced changes in immune or hormonal uterine function resulting in an improvement in the interaction between the blastocyst and the endometrium or the lining of the uterus.
Hypnosis is one of the most effective tools that I know of for helping the mind to support the body throughout IVF treatment, as well as to help people to cope better with the whole experience. It can enhance natural conception & compliments IVF. Your fertility can be greatly enhanced with Hypnosis.

Case study:
Shilpa Jindal (name changed on request), 31 a housewife diagnosed with infertility in 2013. She
underwent IVF treatment at Mother’s Lap IVF centre in 2014. I was very anxious and doubtful about IVF. I had no idea how it will gonna help me as there was lot of mental and emotional pressure. My ET was due and during it I was extremely stressed out when the doctors there talked to me and they explained me that hypnosis will gonna help me in conceiving better.
She spent some time telling me about what the last two and half years had been like for her and how it had left her all broken. She told us all the family history how she had turned down social engagements, holidays and family gatherings to avoid being taunted by the relatives of not being pregnant yet.
So we counseled her, told her to perform deep breathing exercises and started the hypnotherapy procedure by taking her into deep trance, made her visualized that her baby is nearer to her.
As a result of our work, now Shilpa is happy with her 1 year old baby girl. Hypnosis is a wonderful way to change any negative feelings & release emotional blocks.

The reason hypnosis makes such a dramatic difference is not fully known but the body can be made to relax more completely and this makes all the hormone systems work more effectively. You can also relax the uterus which then allows for the egg to be implanted more easily.

Frozen embryo transfer- some frequently asked questions

Embryo transfer is a part of IVF process. Main part of IVF is the ET which is called Embryo Transfer which usually takes 10 to 15 days to be injected in woman’s womb. Spare embryos from your IVF treatment can be frozen for future use, depending on their quality. Embryos can be stored for up to ten years for future treatment if your first cycle was unsuccessful or for siblings. Freezing is complex and you should bear in mind that success rates can be reduced with frozen embryo transfer. The culture medium containing one or two embryos is loaded into a thin catheter with a syringe on the end. The doctor carefully guides the catheter through the vagina and cervix, and deposits the embryo(s) into the uterus. Implantation begins three to four days later.

Now let’s take few FAQ’s

Q. 1 Who does it benefit the most?

Ans. Infertile couples, single parent, aged couples. Lets say if a couple has a baby through IVF and the couple froze some of the eggs for future use. When she returns in a few years for an FET for her second baby, her ovaries and eggs will have aged and her fertility will have statistically decreased somewhat, but her frozen embryos are just as good cellularly as they were when she was younger. It's like a head-start in the getting-pregnant process for older women.

Q. 2 What is the cost of FET(frozen embryo transfer)in India?

Ans. Embryos are frozen with an IVF /ICSI cycle. So, the cost of IVF / ICSI would apply. There would be an additional cost of freezing the embryos and storing them per year. For details on costs, email us on motherslapivf@gmail.com.

Q. 3 What to expect during FET?

Ans. After embryo transfer, you have to wait approximately 1-2 weeks before a pregnancy can be detected. Once the embryo / embryos are in, you just have to chill out and take it easy for a couple weeks. Patients tend to get emotional too during FET; even though FET is less involved and less stressful than IVF, the emotional roller coaster is still present, and as chaotic as ever.  The preparation stage is still a drag, as the two-week wait will be also. After FET one must continue with the medicines estrogen and progesterone.

But one must be careful and should adopts the preventive measures and however if you are an expecting mum it is all the way very much important to take extra preventive measures.

For pregnant woman it is very significant to know that what you inhale goes into your blood stream and affects the foetus. As we all know that the smoke emitted by firecrackers is not exactly what you need to inhale. From the 6th to 12th week, your baby’s organs are formed. So, it is better to avoid the pollutants caused by firecrackers.

Following are the few tips that a pregnant mother must adopt before begin the festivities:

  1. First of all a pregnant mother should dress comfortably and wear flat footwear. It would be better to choose for the cotton clothes as synthetics have the tendency of catching fire easily.
  2. Loud noises could get extremely disturbing and troubling for the mother as well as for the unborn child so it should be avoided.
  3. Do not lift or carry any sort of heavy object.
  4. Avoid lighting fireworks that require running to a safer distance prior to explosion like Anar, Rocket or Chakri. Go easy with the hand-held sparklers.
  5. You can possibly try to celebrate Eco friendly Diwali with diyas, and lanterns rather than the fireworks and crackers.
  6. While touching the feet of elders, bend the knees down rather than the back. And if your bump is large, we are sure elders won't mind if you simply greet with folded hands.
  7. Try maximum to stay indoors. This way you will have ample of rest and pollution will be kept at bay.
  8. Consult a dietitian for a proper diet to be taken during festivals.
  9. Keep medical kits handy and doctor’s number in case of any mishap.

Watch your Blood Pressure if you are pregnant

By Dr. Shobha Gupta

Pre-eclampsia is a hypertensive disorder characterized by the presence of high-blood pressure and high protein levels in the urine (proteinuria) during pregnancy.

According to data collected by the Federation of Obstetric and Gynecological Societies of India (FOGSI) shows that pregnancy-induced high blood which is responsible for 12% of maternal deaths in India, is the leading cause of maternal mortality

The first symptoms of Pre-eclampsia include high blood pressure and a high level of protein in the urine. Pre-eclamptic women also often have swelling in the feet, legs, and hands. This condition is said to appear during the second half of pregnancy, often in the latter part of the second or early third trimesters. However, it can occur earlier too.

If this condition goes unnoticed, pre-eclampsia can lead to a more complicated condition called eclampsia that can put the mother and baby’s life at risk. In rare cases, pre-eclampsia can cause death. Women with pre-eclampsia who have seizures are considered to have pre-eclampsia.

About 10% pregnant women are detected to be suffering from pre-eclampsia. Headache, overall swelling and dizziness are other symptoms. However, not all pregnant women with these symptoms are pre-eclamptic. There is no way to treat the illness per say. Delivering the baby is usually the only cure. Usually this condition automatically

WORLD HEART DAY: PCOS can also be a factor for Heart attacks

29th September is observed to be World Heart Day. Every year about 12 million people throughout the world die or suffer heart attacks or strokes. This disease affects rich and poor people both. Most of people thinks that this is a disease of middle aged men, But the truth is that it affects men and women equally in fact women becomes more prone to it after menopause.

Researchers found that 25 percent of the woman had at least one miscarriage. But when looking at repeated miscarriages, the researchers found that women who had more than three spontaneous miscarriages had a nine fold increased risk of heart attack. Each miscarriage increased a woman’s risk of heart attack by 40 percent. Women who had at least one stillbirth were about 3.5 times as likely to suffer a heart attack.

Women with PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome) have a risk of heart attack 4 to 7 times higher than women of the same age without PCOS. Women with PCOS may have a higher rate of miscarriage because of elevated levels of luteinizing hormones, insulin or glucose.

Smoking, more intake of tobacco, alcohol consumption, poor diet, unhealthy lifestyle, high bp , diabetes, lack of physical activity all these factors

Zero Figure is a hindrance in motherhood

Looking good is everyone’s desire but to compromise with your health to look good is not right. The world is getting obsessed with the “size 0” celebrities. The trend has been on the rise in the west but it seems to have taken over in India too; girls are going a step ahead to get Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone or Priyanka Chopra alike figure,

What is “Size 0”? Size 0 is woman’s clothing size as per the US system, equivalent to a UK size 4. Women have a waist of 22-23 inches, a 32-inch bust, and 33-34 inch hips – the average measurements of an 8-year old girl. Their Body Mass Index is less than 18.

Loads of women are shedding off weight in order to mimic the amazingly thin celebrities without being aware of the fact that they such dramatic weight loss can be injurious to their health. A study done in UK found that skinny women are less likely to become pregnant than those who are overweight – including those classed as dangerously obese.

It is a known fact that being very thin can make it difficult to conceive naturally caused due to a drop in the female sex hormone estrogen. Women need a good amount of body fat to store vital estrogen and other hormone to conceive and sustain the baby. If one continues to shed weight then you may perhaps stop ovulating and when the ovulation is concealed by the ovaries, the woman fails to release an egg every month, reducing chances of pregnancy.

This happens because hypothalamus which functions as a type of thermostat for the body fails to tell the pituitary gland to produce embryos. Once the link between them is broken, it may take years before it is established again and you may be called as infertile.

A study has revealed that Personal appearance can be so important to some people that they will go to great lengths to maintain a youthful look. From luring your boyfriend to look young in your son’s marriage to kitty parties every month to corporate lobby parties the trend to look good and slim is on high. With increasing financial independence and disposable income, women now seem to be going under the knife to move on from fat to fit and boost their sense of confidence and self-worth.

Extramarital affairs are also one such cause for such demands

Just freeze it!

Egg-freezing, or cyro-preservation, is a recent medical development that was first offered to women prior to cancer treatment. In cases where such treatment required the removal of ovaries or potential damage to eggs, women could remove and freeze their eggs for future use. This service is now being offered to all women. Apple and Facebook are offering this service to single women under the age of 35 who are not yet ready for children but hope to have them in the future.

With thriving careers and high disposable incomes, more women are taking the gamble of egg freezing as they climb the ladder or wait for Mr. Right

One of my patient Juhi Verma (name changed), 33, unmarried a Lawyer based in NCR (gurgaon) doesn’t want to get married anytime soon but definitely wants to settle down in years to come and wants to have baby. After going through various researches she decided to freeze her eggs so her search now begin to find a good centre where she can freeze her eggs and later get it inseminated with her future husband’s sperm.

Now, Juhi, 38 married and has one baby girl.

An increasing number of couples these days are opting for egg freezing; with little time in their hands they couldn't manage to meet. Even Apple and Facebook have announced that they will pay for the Egg freezing process to their female employees so that they can delay childbirth and prolong their careers.

We have many couples working for IT firms, BPO’s and management background they freeze their sperms or even go for egg freezing. They all are very

Is Thyroid giving you infertility..?

Let’s know some facts first:
  • According to Indian Thyroid society about 70% of women with PMS have low thyroid levels, which make the ovaries less able to produce progesterone leading to PMS symptoms.
  • 25.6% of Indian population have thyroid dysfunction and possibly resulted infertility
  • Women are 4 times more prone to thyroid disorders than men
  • About 18–20% of couples in reproductive age are infertile.
Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after one year of regular intercourse without contraception. It is one of the medial, social and psychological burden in the world. About 18–20% of couples in reproductive age are infertile.

The thyroid hormone regulates cellular function; abnormal thyroid function can affect your fertility. Undiagnosed and untreated thyroid disease can be a cause for infertility or frequent miscarriage.

According to Indian Thyroid society about 70% of women with PMS have low thyroid levels, which make the ovaries less able to produce progesterone leading to PMS symptoms. 25.6% of Indian population have thyroid dysfunction and possibly resulted infertility.

Having trouble getting pregnant? Your thyroid could be the problem - and your doctor may not even know it. Standard blood tests miss up to 80 percent of cases in which low tissue thyroid levels are causing or contributing to infertility.

Under active thyroid (hypothyroidism) is a condition in which the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough of certain important hormones. For women, there is a link between hypothyroidism and infertility. Low levels of thyroid hormone can interfere with ovulation, which impairs fertility. In addition, some of the underlying causes of hypothyroidism — such as certain autoimmune or pituitary disorders — impair fertility.

I can recall a case of my patient Payal Mehra (name changed on request), 29, a working professional, her world came to an end when she got to know that she can’t be pregnant. As thyroid is very much common in today’s lifestyle, Payal diagnosed with thyroid but

There have been controversies from so long that whether stress can cause infertility or infertility causes stress. A new research conducted in US stated that stress causes infertility in women. Infertility is a term used to explain the inability of a woman to conceive after two years of constant efforts whereas the term Stress is the most over used word in today’s world. We can say that both stress and infertility are co-related terms.

Too much stress may cause infertility among women, says a new research conducted in US. Women with high levels of stress were 29% less likely to get pregnant each month than those women with lower levels, the researchers found. An estimated one in seven couple in India have fertility problems and mostly there is no known medical explanation. It is believed that 10% of the general population suffers from some form of infertility. India has a population of over 1.2 billion, the number of Indians suffering from infertility is huge. Of every 100 couples reporting to fertility clinics, 40 per cent are cases of male infertility, 50 per cent are of women, and the remaining 10 per cent of both partners being infertile.

These might be the reasons if you can’t get pregnant

Infertility is complex and stressful experience and going for IVF often causes more stress to women because of fear of conceiving or not. In vitreo fertilization or IVF is a technique use to treat infertility which is widely popular and acceptable now as more and more couples are seeking towards it. Before anything lets know some facts in India about infertility-

  • Of every 100 couples reporting to fertility clinics, 40 per cent are cases of male infertility, 50 per cent are of women, and the remaining 10 per cent of both partners being infertile.
Now these might be the reasons for your infertility, read on:

1. You don’t have enough healthy eggs:

You’re born with a fixed number of eggs but the number and health of your eggs declines as you get older. In fact, a healthy and fertile 30-year-old has only 20 percent chances of getting pregnant each month, according to a report published in American Society for Reproductive Medicine. If you are consuming fertility drugs then number of eggs further decreases.

What to do: Optimizing egg health is a key, so gets to a healthy weight and if you smoke, quit now. Do not consume drugs for egg formation without IUI and IVF. Consult a good fertility centre and try to complete your family before 35 years of age.

2. It’s your partner’s problem:

Male infertility is responsible for up to one-third of infertility cases. If your partner is overweight, alcoholic or a smoker, it could be affecting your chances of getting pregnant. An infection or inflammation of the prostate glands might also be the cause.

What to do: Losing weight and quitting smoking are the keys, but it’s also important for your partner to

Skinny jeans a risky affair

By Dr. Shobha Gupta

A recent case in published in the British specialist publication, Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry revealed that a 35-year-old woman from Australia had to be admitted to a hospital as she was unable to walk or move her toes and ankles properly, and found her legs severely swollen due to her tight jeans. The reason being, she had spent hours sitting on her haunches and worked around, while wearing skinny jeans. The woman, whose calves had ballooned, developed what is known as the Compartment Syndrome — “a painful and potentially life-threatening serious condition caused by bleeding or swelling within an enclosed bundle of muscles — in this case, the calves”, said the report. The jeans had to be cut and the woman was put on intravenous drip and was able to walk, unaided, only after four days.

There are various risks associated with wearing too-tight trousers or skinny jeans. It could seriously damage your health. It can cut off circulation and cause nerve damage, swelling of the ankles and feet and fertility problems

Tight pants or skinny jeans do in fact damage the testicles; even low sperm count and can cause infertility in men. But that’s not all. Wearing skinny jeans is

Quit Smoking

Cigarette smoking is harmful to the ovaries, and the degree of damage is dependent upon the amount and length of the time a woman smokes or is exposed to a smoked environment. Nicotine and other harmful chemicals in cigarettes interfere with the body’s ability to create estrogen, a hormone that regulates folliculogenesis and ovulation. Cigarettes are not the only source of PAHs - they're also produced when coal, gas and oil are burned, and they're present in car exhaust, tar and char-grilled meat - but inhaling cigarette smoke is the most common - and direct - form of exposure.

Female smokers also have decreased rates of fertility and decreased fallopian tube function. It not only can lead to all kinds of serious problems with the baby but also reduces the chances of IVF producing a live birth by 34% and increases the risk of an IVF pregnancy miscarrying by 30%. A pregnant woman who smokes also adds a risk to pregnancy.

Not only women but have studies show that men who smoke are less fertile than men who don't smoke. It makes sperm cells more sensitive to oxidative stress, smoking itself increases the concentration of free radicals in the seminal fluid. Free radicals can cause sperm DNA fragmentation as well as issues with sperm motility and fertilization

We also tell couples seeking treatment for fertility to stop smoking at least three months before we attempt IVF because sperm needs at least that much time to be produced from germ cell to full sperm

Life Management strategies recommended:
  • Start by quitting
  • Eat a well-balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D
  • Avoid excessive alcohol taking
  • Exercise Regularly
  • Be Nature friendly
  • Be Your Own Bodyguard

Stress can give you thyroid

Most people are aware that stress can cause various health problems. A sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise, smoking, drinking, eating junk food, poor sleep - especially in people who work night shifts, desk job, the tension of meeting targets, all of these lead to stress.

Stress can also cause hypothyroidism. It refers to a state in which the production of thyroid hormone is below normal. The symptoms of hypothyroidism are often subtle, but can include increased cholesterol levels, a state of depression, loss or gain in weight, swollen neck, mood swings, low energy, hair loss, constipation, dry skin, brittle nails, problem with vision and the trembling of hands.

Our bodies are not designed to handle chronic stress. That is why we have adrenal glands. These glands produce hormones in response to stress which help control the heart rate, blood pressure, the level of minerals such as sodium and potassium in the blood and the way the body utilises food, among other things.

Sometime, the adrenal glands are unable to handle the high level of stress we live with these days. They then become weak and put the body in a state of breaking down. We can say that weak adrenal glands cause hypothyroidism.

It is a common problem these days, especially after 25 years of age. Women are four times more prone to thyroid disorders than men. If undiagnosed or untreated, thyroid disease can be a cause of infertility or frequent miscarriage.

Hyperthyroidism can be treated in many ways. However, a doctor chooses the line of treatment based on several variables like the cause of hyperthyroidism, the age of the patient, the size of the thyroid gland and the presence of other illnesses.

Thyroid hormone replacement is very effective in restoring fertility. It may take one to two months to normalise your thyroid hormone levels with medication. Once you start the medication, you must check your TSH levels to ensure that they are in the normal range. You will usually need to continue the medicines for the rest of your life and recheck your thyroid function every six months or so.

QUICK TIPS:
  • Do not ignore early symptoms: Be alert to symptoms like weight loss or gain, constipation, muscle and joint aches, sluggishness, intolerance towards cold weather, abnormal and irregular periods, fatigue, brittle nails, hair fall, blackening of skin and sleeplessness.
  • Get proper diagnosis: People should go for a thyroid test once in a year. These include the TSH test, chest X-ray and T4 or thyroxin test.
  • Lose weight: Losing weight is of utmost importance for a patient of hypothyroidism. Consult a dietitian or join a gym.
  • Get enough sleep and eliminate stress: Immediately address your stress level for the proper functioning of your adrenal glands. You can try yoga or practise breathing exercises.
  • Exercises regularly: Even a five-minute walk in office counts. Ideally, walk for 30 minutes in a day and take the stairs instead of the lift. Small lifestyle chances can make a big difference.
  • Eat well: Have a proper balanced diet and three meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner - in a day. Consult a dietitian who can recommend the ideal diet for thyroid patients.
