Irregular periods? This article may answer your questions

Menstrual periods are often irregular in teenage years, when our cycles first begin. It may take several years for a woman's hormones to balance, so that ovulation and cycles become regular. Hormone imbalance is what also causes menstrual irregularities when peri-menopause and menopause arise. What surprises many women is that, with menopause, our cycles can become less frequent with less bleeding or more frequent with heavy bleeding and passage of blood clots. If menopause comes before age 40, it is known as premature ovarian failure. This needs to be checked by your doctor.

Early menopause can cause many health problems including osteoporosis, strokes, heart disease and emotional and cognitive deficits. It should not be taken lightly. But, of the many reasons for menstrual irregularities and missed periods, the most common is pregnancy.

Air pollution causes infertility too

Air pollution has garnered considerable interest in last few years because of the multiple adverse effects reported on human health. Last, year also after diwali a layer of smog has covered many parts of the country and this year too deapite the ban on crackers in the capital a layer of smog has covered all the parts of the city. The injurious effects of air pollution are widespread and are many. Every day commuting to work or travelling around our town or city, we’re being exposed to high levels of toxins. Air pollution is a global environmental burden, and has been identified as a significant public health risk. It is very dangerous to our health although its impact on fertility remains unclear.

There are lot of heavy particles presented in the air such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, manganese dioxide, zinc oxide, nitrates etc. which directly affects our hormones and triggers fertility issues. Actually the chemical particles in the air are enough to make people infertile. We have recently seen at least 15 to 20 patients especially men and after complete examination we came to know that due to air pollution there is a reduction in their testosterone or oestrogen levels that leads to low desire for intercourse, thereby hindering their sex life and further

Travelling during IVF Treatment

Many questions keep pondering us during IVF treatment. One of them would be should I travel when
my IVF treatment is going on…? Many couples ask me, if they can take vacations and travel before, after, or during treatment. Actually, IVF medications and procedures can interfere dramatically with your day-to-day life. In all honesty, the bottom line is better safe than sorry.

It would be quite difficult for one to travel during the medication phase of the IVF process. Regardless of your medication schedule, which is likely to be sturdy, you will be seeing your doctor on a regular basis for monitoring appointments that include blood work and ultrasounds. It is likely that you won’t be able to get away during this phase of your treatment. Keep in mind, you also don’t know how your body is going to react to the medications, you might want to be near your doctor just in case you have some bad side effects or concerns.

The next part of the IVF process includes two procedures; egg retrieval and embryo transfer. You won’t be able to find here to travel at all. Some IVF patients do travel from their home quite some distance to seek treatment in a larger town or city. This type of traveling is okay, as you will need to travel back and forth between your home and treatments. Some doctors do recommend a hotel stay for a night or two immediately following each procedure.

So you are thinking to yourself, after all that I have gone through I need a little time to get away. Dependent on your doctor, you typically will

Most common causes of female infertility

A woman’s fertility is influenced by her age: female fertility peaks in the early to mid 20’s and declines slowly until the age of 35, However, there are a number of younger women who, despite their perceived fertility, have difficulty in conceiving.
It is generally advised that women under the age of 35 age wait for one year before investigating why they are failing to conceive.

There are two types of infertility:
Primary infertility: where someone who has never conceived a child in the past has difficulty conceiving.
Secondary infertility: where a person has had one or more pregnancies in the past, but is having difficulty conceiving again. It is estimated that 1/3 of the causes of infertility are associated with male factors such as poor sperm quality, 1/3 attributed to female factors. Three of the most common conditions that contribute to early female infertility are pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome.

Mid-thirties and Infertility: Age does matters

These days more couples are delaying starting family into early mid-thirties’. The golden age for women
to conceive in their third decade of life that is their twenties. As more women are delaying getting pregnant, it is even more important that they try and maintain healthy life style to maintain optimum fertility.

Age and Fertility
Women’s age plays an important role in their fertility, women are born with around 4-5 million eggs which remain in a quiet stage until they reach teenage years. From teenage onwards, there is a slow and steady loss of the follicles and only 400,000 – 500,000 follicles remain. The process of the drop in quality and quantity of eggs gathers pace around the mid-thirties’. It gains even more pace in late thirties and later as women enter into their 40’s. The chances of getting pregnant for women in their 40’s can be as low as 5% when compared to

Infertile: doesn’t mean you’ll never get pregnant

Infertility is clinically defined as not able to get pregnant after one year of having regular sexual intercourse without the usage of birth control measures. On the other hand men are considered as infertile when they’ve been trying to make their wives conceive for one year with no success. So, basically there are plenty of people out there in the world struggling with this label of being infertile.

Infertile doesn't mean that you're out of options. Today, we are living in the field of technology and there is a solution to most world problems. Today, IVF which is known as In vitreo fertilization is the hope to help women who are childless.

There are a few factors that can contribute to female infertility like advanced maternal age, defined as having a pregnancy at the age of 35 or over, as you get older, your fertility gradually declines, which is why women who fall into this group may take longer to get pregnant and other conditions like endometriosis, PCOS, having damaged or blocked fallopian tubes that can’t be treated with surgery, and premature ovarian failure (a loss of normal ovarian function before age 40) may also make it harder to get pregnant without reproductive assistance;

Hepatitis contributes to male infertility

World Hepatitis Day falls on 28 July 2017 and the theme given by World Health Organization for 2017 is “Eliminate Hepatitis”

Hepatitis as we all know is the inflammation of the liver and prove to be deadly in the long run if ignored. According to the World Health Organization, there are 400 million people worldwide who are living with Hepatitis B or C. Globally, every year 1.4 million people die from viral hepatitis. There are five viruses that can cause hepatitis - A, B, C, D and E. Out of these, hepatitis A, B & C cause over 90% of the diagnosed cases of the disease. While viral hepatitis can be acute or chronic, hepatitis A and E do not cause chronic illness. Hepatitis B and C are the most common disease viruses and can cause chronic illness.  According to WHO Viral hepatitis affects 400 million people globally and, given the size of the epidemic, anyone and everyone can be at risk.

Let’s look at the risk factors hepatitis has brought:

Still not Pregnant? Then you should consider these facts

You are planning to conceive for long and not getting results. This problem is very common now. I see at least 40 to 50 patients in a day coming to me for their infertility issues. This is because conception is process that calls for more trials before you finally succeed. You should know that there are some medical facts which keep coming on your way of getting pregnant.

According to ICMR Bulletin it is estimated that globally around 60 to 80 million couples suffer from infertility annually, of which probably between 15 to 20 million are in India alone.

When everything else fails and you think that the in vitro fertilization or IVF may be the only option for you to opt, but before considering anything know some facts that can hinder your chances of conception:

1. Abnormal Periods:

Abnormal or irregular periods is one sign that can point towards a woman’s infertility. A menstrual cycle that is too long (35 days or more) or too short (21 days or less) could indicate problems with ovulation.

What you can do: Sometimes a healthy diet, exercise and medication can regularise your periods and help you conceive. But first do consult a good doctor who can also prescribes few medicines and tells you the way to modify your lifestyle.

2. You age and decline in the number of healthy eggs has a direct relationship

You are born with a fixed number of eggs. But the number gets declines as you age and so does the health of those eggs. According to The American Society of Reproductive Medicine, even a healthy and fertile 30-year-old woman’s chances of getting pregnant reduces by 20% with each passing month.

What you can do: Optimize the health of your eggs. To do so help yourself stay healthy, maintain a good optimal weight and give up your vices. Quit smoking and limit your alcohol intake while planning for a baby. Get in touch with a good fertility centre if you need help, and try to complete your family before 35 years of age without delaying the process to avoid future complications. In case you want to delay pregnancy and want to keep your eggs in good health till conception, you should probably try freezing your eggs for future use.

3. Your partner might have a problem/ Male infertility

Remember your partner’s health plays a significant role in conception after yours. Male infertility is responsible for up to one-third of infertility cases. If your partner is overweight, an alcoholic or a smoker, it could be affecting your chances of getting pregnant. An infection or inflammation of the prostate glands might also stand to be a probable cause if you are not getting pregnant.

What you can do: Talk to your partner and be open about it but

Fertility and Age – a direct link

There is no denying that the delay in pregnancy has become a trend especially in urban states. Women delays pregnancy to pursue careers, doing business etc. And, it is unlikely that this trend of delaying parenthood is not going to change anytime soon. But what can you do to assess your fertility health, what really are your chances of having a baby in your late 30s and is there anything you can do to preserve your fertility?

The key to fertility is a woman’s ovarian reserve i.e. the availability of healthy eggs. A decline in ovarian reserve means that not only do the ovaries have fewer eggs to offer, but the eggs they do have are of poorer quality. The challenge for many women choosing to have their first child mid-30s or later is that as part of the body’s natural aging process, a woman’s eggs age too. This can lead to infertility and/or miscarriage.

Achieving a natural pregnancy after 40 years of age is a challenge for many women, but getting pregnant is only half the journey. Miscarriage rates over 40 are 50% and rise quickly with each advancing year.

Hormone testing to assess egg quality and number:

Three simple blood tests can check hormone levels and reveal more information about egg quality and number. These tests may also help diagnose infertility in a younger woman, who ordinarily would not be experiencing diminished ovarian reserve or poor quality, but may be living with an undiagnosed condition:

1. Basic FSH Test: FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) is the main hormone involved in producing mature eggs in the ovaries. If this test reveals excessive

Does Irregular periods hampers IVF Treatment?

If you are having irregular periods for a while then please do not ignore it. Today, in this blog I am gonna right whether irregular periods hamper your IVF treatment or not and what you need to know about what are irregular periods. Menstrual cycle normally ranges from 21 days to 35 days. Some people get periods after 21 days and some after every 35 days, which is considered normal. However, if you are getting periods beyond that time frame or if the gap between periods is more than two weeks, it is known as irregular. Also, if menstrual cycle is shorter than that (get after 15 days) or longer than that (after 40 days, 50 days), it means your periods are irregular.

This could mean two things either you have PCOS or few eggs are left inside your body. Also, if you get a period after a gap of 40 days between periods, it does not necessarily indicate PCOS.  It could also mean that you are approaching menopause. So, it is important to know why you are getting irregular periods.

As far as IVF treatment is concerned, irregular periods are not likely to affect IVF cycle. This is because, in IVF, medications are given from outside to grow

How to deal with hormonal changes

You just cannot avoid hormonal changes. From puberty through to pregnancy and even post-menopause, hormonal imbalances can affect all areas of your life including your ability to feel comfortable during intimacy with your partner.

Today, in this blog I will talk about few tips on how to handle these hormonal changes:

1. Ensure that you take a balanced diet

Take balancing healthy fats. Start eating avocado, coconut and olive oil, as well as switch to omega-3s in oily fish, walnuts and chia seeds. Cutting back on sugar and refined carbohydrates can be really beneficial for hormonal symptoms like fatigue and hot flushes,.

2. Track changes in your sexual desire

The reproductive hormones including estrogen and progesterone can affect sexual desire in phases. You may find your desire tends to increase in the days leading up to ovulation (when oestrogen is highest) and decrease shortly after ovulation is over. As women age, levels of oestrogen and testosterone start to fall, and changes to sexual desire are common.

3. Vaginal cleanliness

Peri menopause is the precursor to menopause and can start as early as the mid-thirties. You will still have regular periods, but ovulate less effectively,

Tobacco - a threat in reproduction

Tobacco use has been considered controversial for long although scientific evidence regarding its health hazards.

At present, nearly 0.9 million tobacco-related deaths occur in India annually as compared to 5.5 million worldwide which is expected to increase to about 10 million during 2020s. The report also revealed that 8 to 10 lakh persons die of tobacco related diseases every year and this reflects a higher mortality than the combined deaths resulting from other major diseases, such as tuberculosis, HIV AIDS and malaria.

Many of us are aware about the diseases that caused by consumption of tobacco which is mainly cancer of oral cavity, larynx, oesophagus, urinary bladder, kidney, stomach, pancreas, cervix. But several research studies have also identified smoking or consuming tobacco in any form adds multiple risk factors of infertility especially in men; risk of osteoporosis, bone fractures and early age wrinkles also.

Tobacco usage in any form like cigarette smoking, hookah, consuming bidi etc can harm you in many ways. Let’s have a look how:

Unable to reproduce if you are a tobacco lover

The Statesman
Male fertility which means that you are unable to make your wife pregnant is affected by a variety of lifestyle habits that include tobacco use. A large population of Indian men is addicted to tobacco chewing. Tobacco chewing is strongly associated with a decrease in sperm quality and to a lesser extent with oligoasthenozoospermia or azoospermia.

The relationship between tobacco use and male fertility has always been controversial but yes indeed; tobacco use is a potential detrimental factor for decrease in sperm count in men. Smoking can decrease sperm count in men, making the

Boost up your fertility at 40+ with these tips

According the reports by National Statistics Bureau , people have been increasingly delaying childbearing until later life, resulting in rising the number of infertility cases. The main reason of delaying chlid bearing would be the increasing importance of a career and the rising costs of child rearing.

It is a proven fact that as the body ages, getting pregnant can be more challenging as compare to people in their teens and twenties. Many women considering pregnancy in their 40s will then look to IVF treatment as their last resort. In my opinion before jumping to IVF treatment; there are lifestyle choices that every woman needs to consider to improve her fertility and likelihood of having a healthy baby.

1. Get sexually active

Have sex at least every other day during your fertile window. Understanding your own menstrual cycle (which you can do here) is probably one of the most important things you can do, studies show you're most likely to get pregnant if you have sex within a day or so of ovulation. Ovulation usually happens about 14 days after the first day of your last period.

2. Eat good

Include nuts, vegetables and pulses in your diet for healthy fibre and limit sugar content. Being overweight can seriously affect your chances of conceiving so, maintaining a healthy weight, and and cutting out the processed foods should assist both your chances of conceiving and the potential health of the foetus.

3. Give yourself a pre natal vitamin boost

Vitamin D and Folic acid are both recommended by the NHS to encourage the healthy development of the foetus and in particular its neural pathways.

4. Be aware of changes in your body

If you notice symptoms like sudden weight gain or

Your questions about IVF are not that much tricky than you think: All about IVF

There are N number of questions comes to our mind whenever we go for treatments like IVF, Surrogacy, ICSI etc. or even when you are unable to conceive then there are various question arises. Here are few of them with their answers:

Q.1 What is the success rate for IVF?

Ans. Success rate vary from centre to centre from where the patient is taking the treatment and is more individualized depends on cause of infertility. But here at Mother’s Lap IVF Centre we have delivered 60%- 70% success rate which is still sustained and maintained.

Q.2 What should one expect from the IVF treatment?

Ans.  IVF is the combination of female’s egg and a male’s sperm and implanting the resulting embryos in woman’s uterus. IVF is more costly and persistent than other treatments but can be successful if other options fail. Try to relax and be positive throughout the process.

Q.3 What's the time taken to conceive and approximate cost?

Ans.  10 to 15 days for injection and after 2 or 3 days we do embryo transfer and then pregnancy test. So it takes roughly around 4 to 6 weeks. Cost for IVF is around 1.2 Lakhs to 1.7 Lakhs; but again it depends on centre to centre.

Q.4 What are the Precautions for late pregnancies?

Ans.  If a lady is pregnant in the late ages then she needs extra care as it is always risky to conceive after certain age.

She should be registered for close monitoring with a

Direct causes of Female infertility

In my previous blog, I have listed indirect causes of female infertility such as stress, over working, age factor, smoking etc. Now let’s talk about direct causes of women reproductive dysfunction that resulted in infertility.

1. PCOS/PCOD:

Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome and Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease are the disease both associated with ovaries; ovaries are the very important part of women’s reproductive body. PCOS is an endocrine system disorder in which woman’s levels of sex hormones estrogen and progesterone gets out of balance. This leads to growth of ovarian cysts. PCOD is a condition developed by the hormonal imbalance, which lead to collection of mature eggs in the ovary, as they cannot be discharged. These also become cysts and some of the cysts lead to more cysts and this cycle goes on. One of the causes would be insulin diet; hormonal disturbances or stress that leads to PCOD.

2. Blockage in fallopian tube:

Fallopian tubes are needed for transmitting of eggs and sperms. The tube is usually wherein woman’s egg and man’s sperm meet up to get fertilization. When there is a blockage of the tube in one area or perhaps each side, natural pregnancy is not possible. This blockage might be because of sexually transmitted infections (STI) for example PID i.e pelvic inflammatory disease. Therefore all the vital fertility checks are carried out by the infertility specialists in Patna to find out the real reason of fallopian tube blockage before starting any infertility treatment.

3. Vaginal issues:

Sometimes, woman’s vagina might be too narrow to allow access to the man’s penis or perhaps panic could hold her in the course of sexual

Indirect causes of female infertility

Women being infertile are still a taboo but at the same time our technology is so advanced that it doesn’t let it untreated for a long time. There are several issues which are accountable for female infertility. Today, I will list out some of the indirect causes of female infertility.

1. Obesity: Obesity is a chronic medical condition characterized by too much body fat Being overweight affects everything.  Yet another growing problem in today’s time among the population is infertility caused due to Obesity. I see at least 30 to 35 patients in a day coming to me for infertility out of which 10% are obese.

2. Smoking: Cigarette smoking is harmful to the ovaries, and the degree of damage is dependent upon the amount and length of the time a woman smokes or is exposed to a smoked environment. Female smokers also have decreased rates of fertility and decreased fallopian tube function.

3. Overworking: Getting in to the office early, staying till late. Always working on the computer. Working too much regularly can have negative effects on your physical as well as mental health as all these factors bring ever increasing stress. Stress in your life can lead to unhealthy body conditions like upset stomach, elevated blood pressures, poor sleep patterns, slowing of metabolism etc. which can actually throw your life out of gear and these

5 things to know about IVF Treatment

IVF or in vitreo fertilization is a method to treat infertility worldwide. As we all know all that infertility is a common modern day problem which means when you are unable to conceive naturally despite of one year of trying. As you age your fertility levels will decline and then you opt for IVF treatment to conceive So, it is very important to know things about IVF treatment before jumping into it:

1. When women's and men’s fertility really starts to fall

First and foremost you should know about the time or age when a woman's fertility starts to drop dramatically. It starts declining from the age of 30 onwards. Diminishing egg numbers along with diminishing egg quality is also one issue. A simple blood test, known as AMH, will tell a woman if she has a normal number of eggs for her age but tells us little about the quality of the eggs remaining. On the other hand, men's fertility can also reduce with age. While women are born with all the eggs they will ever have, men are continually producing new sperm. However, as men age, the quality of the genes in their sperm deteriorates from 40 onwards.

2. Success rate of IVF treatment

There are ‘N’ numbers of fertility clinics and infertility specialists in the world and many have achieved the highest success rates in IVF in the world. However, an individual couple's chance of success depends on a number of factors such as the cause of infertility, age and lifestyle. As a general guide, there is a 50 percent chance of conception per IVF treatment if aged under 30. This goes down to a 20 percent chance for your first IVF treatment over the age of 40.

3. Cost of IVF treatment

Infertility is increasing at a fast paced and IVF is becoming a common option for all. So, as a result IVF has become more affordable in India than in other
